Our highlight this month is on Animax’s Tracesure® Lamb Finisher and Tracesure® Cobalt.
Cobalt is the precursor element required for making B-12. It is common in the industry to be misled by ‘go faster stripes’ on supplements that claim B-vitamins inclusion. However, if the sheep’s diet contains all essential trace elements, it is not a requirement to have B-12 vitamins as rumen bacteria makes this naturally. Therefore, Tracesure® Lamb Finisher contains all the essential trace elements (cobalt, selenium and iodine) without the need for B-vitamin supplements. If copper is required too, it is advised to ask for Tracesure® Lamb Finisher with copper; if only cobalt is required then Tracesure® Cobalt is needed.
Once lambs are weaned, cobalt supplementation is important due to cobalt deficiencies in grass throughout many parts of the UK and Ireland. A cobalt deficiency can be defined by slow growth due to poor appetite; and can be followed by weakness, anaemia and emaciation.
As Dr Berry highlights in Animax’s blog, cobalt supplementation is especially important this year due to the high rainfall levels in February and March, which leached cobalt levels from grass. Despite ensuing grass growth with the warmer weather, cobalt levels can still remain lower than usual due to dilution of the mineral.
The leaching bolus technology of which Tracesure® range is formed, is patented by and unique to Animax. This technology ensures the release of trace elements is regulated and controlled.
