We all know that lambing can be a stressful time of year, when running on a lack of sleep and copious amounts of coffee seems to be the only option! Many farmers are already ahead of the curve when it comes to preparing for the lambing season, but just in case, we’ve pulled a short guide of things to bear in mind and a checklist of essential lambing equipment that are critical for ensuring the whole process runs as smoothly as possible.

Ensure the best Condition for Ewes

Ensuring ewes are in the best possible condition in the last 6-8 weeks of pregnancy is essential for good colostrum quality, reducing low birth rates and mortality. It’s also worth considering a vet to take blood samples prior to lambing to guarantee their diet is sufficient of energy and protein.

Good Housing and Hygiene

Preparing your lambing set up ahead of time and ensuring the pens are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before any ewes are brought inside. Utilising plenty of clean, dry bedding will also help to reduce the risk of spreading any infections that may occur. It’s also always a good idea to make sure you have an efficient pen system in place in case of rearing surplus lambs – an additional spare pair of hands works wonders too!

Colostrum and Naval Management

Ensuring you have the correct management system in place for new-born lambs is paramount. It’s advised that lambs need to receive 200ml of colostrum within the first two hours of birth and within 24 hours, the new-born lamb must receive the equivalent of 200ml/kg body weight in colostrum.

Once the umbilical cord is clipped, it’s good practice to apply iodine solution as soon as possible, to prevent any infection. Keep a watchful eye to ensure the navel remains dry.

Consider Shearing or Crutching Prior to Lambing

Shearing results in a much drier, cleaner environment for new-born lambs, as well as easier feeding. It’s important to ensure you’re compensating heat loss with additional feed, particularly during colder weather.

Tell-tale Signs of Labour

Your ewes may give off some important indicators that they’re about to give birth, these could include isolation, nesting, pawing the ground and restlessness (consistently getting up and down).
