Farmers across the UK are facing a shift in regulatory requirements with the introduction of new veterinary attestation rules. These regulations aim to ensure biosecurity and animal welfare standards are met, particularly for those involved in exporting livestock to the EU or Northern Ireland.

What does a vet attestation involve?

From 13th December 2023, veterinary attestation will be required for exports. This means farmers must arrange an on-farm vet visit for biosecurity risks to be assessed. During the visit, vets will complete an on-site inspection and provide professional advice if there are any concerns.

The main purpose of this process is to demonstrate that animals reared on farm for slaughter are under veterinary supervision.

Keeping records

Once a vet attestation has been completed, farmers will receive a vet attestation number (VAN) which can be used as evidence of an annual health visit.

The VAN should be kept as a record and shown to a meat processor or at livestock auction if requested.

Frequency of visits

The new rules highlight that a vet attestation remains valid for 12 months and that farmers are responsible for ensuring the visit takes place annually.

The attestation can be combined with routine veterinary visits, including government-supported initiatives.

Positive changes for the farming sector

While these new veterinary attestation rules may initially present challenges, they ultimately contribute to strengthening biosecurity measures and ensuring the good health of livestock.

SQP Sales Rep, Elle, shared “Introducing the attestation to the farming sector will allow farmers to show that their livestock have a good standard of animal welfare”

Farmers should work closely with their veterinarians, keeping up-to-date with the new regulation to maintain a smooth and compliant export process.

Elle added “StowAg are encouraging farmers to secure their attestation before December, particularly if your vet is already due to visit your farm.”
