Heat is one of the basic elements required to simply survive. For centuries, even with developments of central heading and radiators, fires have provided us with warmth and heat, atmosphere and aesthetical value.

There are many fuel sources available, and it can be difficult to know which is the correct one most suited to your requirements. It’s also worth bearing in mind guidelines and restrictions on burning fuels, and the hamful gases they can emit. Here at StowAg we stock a basic range of fuels, which we are constantly adapting and refining to better meet our customer needs, not to mention conforming with government advice.

We’ve compiled a simple guide with recommendations to keep the fires burning this winter!

Wood

Although wood is a naturally occurring product and it’s economical when you can produce your own free of charge, the emissions it produces vary dramatically depending on the moisture content of the wood. Newly-felled wood is referred to as ‘wet’ given its naturally higher moisture content. Higher moisture levels produce more smoke when burning, which in turn creates more harmful gas emissions.

Household Coal

Household coal is a traditional coal for open fires and multi-fuel stoves. However, it emits a high level of pollutants and is therefore not suitable for use in smoke control areas or smokeless zones. There are also concerns as to its high emittance of harmful substances, and there are efforts being made to supress the sale of this fuel source entirely. StowAg still stock this traditional coal, and it’s available in store or online.

With more evidence and research taking place, and the government (along with DEFRA) pledging to terminate the sale of fuels emitting high smoke levels, what are the alternatives?

Smokeless Coal

Recently introduced to StowAg’s winter essentials range, smokeless coal offers numerous benefits over traditional household coal. Not only does it burn hotter and for longer, its anthracite-based construction ensures that when combusting the gasses emitted are minimal and least harmful. This economical and efficient alternative to traditional household coal is becoming a more popular choice, especially as the government seeks to phase out the sale of traditional coal by 2023 (according to CNBC report).

Manufactured smokeless fuels

There is an increasing range of smokeless fuels available, from wood pulp pellets to compact ‘ovals’ and fire logs – a compacted log-shaped fuel which can be lit directly without the need for firelighters or kindling.

Seasoned or Dried Wood

When purchasing or producing your own wood for open fires or multi-fuel stoves, ensure the wood is either kiln dried to a maximum 20% moisture level, or seasoned for around 2 years. Not only does this ensure a better air quality in your home when burning, but also provides a more economical fuel consumption with less by-product released.
