About John:

Farming has always played a major role in my life. Throughout my teens farming was my life and livelihood; not only working on the family farm but on various local farms when needed. Growing up on a farm I was responsible from 12 years old for the day-to-day management of the flock and the farm with my siblings. When I was 19 I moved away from the farm and worked at a major Co-Operative for 3 and a half years. Here I learnt a lot of valuable skills and got to work in every area of the business, starting as a driver, then working up to a warehouse man, yard foreman, transport manager and also working in the stores. For the following 3 years I worked at an agrichemical company as a store man and delivery driver. It was with this company I developed an interest in the animal health sector. Worm resistance is a constant problem in animal health due to lost productivity from drench resistance in sheep worms. It has been recognised as a widespread problem and remains a challenge for me as an SQP. The devaluing of innovative and specialist products that are then given away. Meaningless money going into research and development and less innovative and specialist products coming through to the agriculture sector.

Working at StowAG:

At the beginning of 2017 I felt it was time for a change after being at Cox & Robinson for 20 years. StowAg was a natural choice for me with its great reputation within the agriculture sector, and with the introduction of animal health to their offering at the point of me joining. It is such a delight to work with a company with a great team ethic and can-do attitude. The willingness to solve customers’ requests and build great long term relationships is highly valuable and great to work alongside.

What makes it worth it?

I’m a bit of a problem solver - give me a challenge and I love trying to find the solution! Working in animal health, my day-to-day job is full of challenges which gives me a real buzz! I also get great pleasure meeting new and old customers every day and hearing some great stories along the way. Whether I'm selling a cattle crush or a pair of wellingtons, simply being able to be a help to our customers is the most rewarding aspect to my job.

What do you do outside of StowAg?

I'm such an outdoors person and love to spend my time doing anything outside really; gardening, socialising, cycling, playing football, refereeing the local boys team and training the team. Of course, not to mention keeping my hand with a few local farmers, especially if they supply breakfast or dinner! There you go. (This could all be true or it could all be a fabulous story).
